Rinse Your Plastic Containers!

April 27, 2022

Why do you have to rinse your plastic containers to recycle them?

If your packaging or containers are recyclable, it’s tempting to toss them right into your recycling cart after they’re empty. But, oftentimes these containers need to be rinsed out before they can be recycled. This means rinsing out recyclable takeout containers, laundry detergent bottles, shampoo or body wash bottles, or anything else that might have held liquid or food.

Since Peoria’s recycling carts are single stream, your plastic containers go right in with your cardboard. Grease, food particles, and residue from the contents of containers can contaminate other recyclables in your cart. Even if your unrinsed yogurt container, soda can or other residue-containing item is upright when you put it into the bin, after being dumped into the truck, bounced along for miles and compressed, the stuff inside will probably come out.

That’s not good for any paper or cardboard on board the truck. While a drop of food or liquid might not make a huge difference in your home’s cart, it adds up. And even a small bit of oil or grease can ruin the entire load of paper recyclables, and the lot would have to be thrown out.
