Yes, Peoria Picks Up! Plastics
Plastic containers are in pretty much every room of your home. We often think of it mainly in the kitchen but you’ll also find it in the garage, bathroom, laundry room, office, etc. Like other materials mentioned in Yes, Peoria Picks Up! Cans and Yes, Peoria Picks Up! Paper, you can also add most of the plastics in our homes to your recycling cart.
What types of plastics are recyclable?
Here in Peoria, PDC accepts plastics #1-5, and 7. Below is a list of some of the most common items you’ll find with those numbers.
- Milk jugs
- Soda and pop bottles
- Some water bottles
- Laundry detergent containers
- Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bottles
- Mouthwash bottles
- Food containers
- Salad dressing and condiment bottles
- Yogurt containers
How do I know what number the plastic is?
Look on the sides and bottom of the plastic container. If it is recyclable, there will be a triangle of arrows, the recycling symbol, with a number in the middle. That number tells you the type of plastic. If it is a #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7, it can go into your recycling cart.
No plastic bags, please.
You may notice some plastic grocery bags or packaging materials have the recycling symbol with a #4. These materials are not recyclable in your curbside pick up. You can recycle these at local grocery stores.
How should we recycle plastics?
It is like the process with cans.
- Once the plastic is empty, rinse it out to get any leftover food, liquid, or residue out (no need to remove labels).
- Let the plastic dry.
- If it has a cap, put the cap back on.
- Place it in your recycling cart.
